Obituary
By John Abbott

It is with great sadness that I write this. I have experienced the death of a great friend - my desktop computer! The poor thing put up a valiant fight but ultimately lost its battle with the electrons late yesterday evening on May 15, 2010. It is now the largest paperweight that I own. I don’t think my reprogramming it with a new OS every week had anything to do with it, but my beloved wife, Carolyn, simply gets the giggles when I try to explain away the cause of death as NOT being from installing a new OS every week.

I will limp along with my laptop for awhile. I just cannot justify spending money on a computer at this moment in time. However, I thought I would take this time of grieving to clear my conscience over a love affair I’ve been having. I’m smitten with Apple Computers. It is totally possible that I may wind up with an Apple notebook. Yes I know it is proprietary and therefore forbidden fruit for a Linux – Open Source guru. But I’m being tempted almost to a point of collapse. How does iPad sound?

I think the deceased unit will become an organ donor. I will remove its drives and store them for future use (if they aren’t diseased) and have a decent burial at a computer recycling center. There will be no viewing or funeral service but potentially a memorial service later in the summer. The Man Cave will never be the same! The unit has been a faithful friend and partner since 2005 and leaves behind cables and monitors and adapters and USB ports from our first upgrade.

Below is the Apple iPad that I am lusting after above and beyond all other alternative computer replacements.
