Palmia has fun contest for members

WHAT - Win money by surfing their web site

HOW - Locate the member email address hidden somewhere within www.palmia.org other than the Members Only page. If it’s your email address, you are a winner. Just click on the write button and tell us what page has your name. If you find another person’s name, be a good sport and keep quiet. You will get another chance next month.

WHY - Your club’s Board of Directors wants to give you added incentive to surf this site and to share your email address with other club members. Remember that you can’t be eligible for this contest if we don’t have your email address.

WHEN - You may enter the contest at any time. Each month a new email address will be added and the old one removed.

Under the Computer Hood User Group in San Diego has annual picnic at June meeting

www.uchug.org

The meeting location shifts to Mission Bay at Crown Point. The picnic started around 5:00 PM and went until sunset. Pizza, soft drinks and paper goods were provided by UCHUG. Members often bring other goodies such as big bags of potato chips, etc. It’s a good time to socialize and enjoy lots of computer talk.

Several members of SCRUGS (Southern California Regional User Group Summit), a group of 20+ user groups whose officers have been meeting quarterly for over 10 years, have recently had a presentation by Rich Eaton from the Simon Wiesenthal Center. His topic was Hate on the Internet and it was very informative. His presentation focuses on how groups like Al Qaeda, Hezbolla, Hamas and the Ku Klux Klan plus others exploit the Internet to spread their messages of hate, suspicion and fear. In his work, Rick visits more than 7000 websites/year gathering evidence of the threats posed by these notorious groups and others. Rick has testified numerous times before Congress and provided briefings on the results of his research and from his work undercover with federal and local law-enforcement agencies. All of the Southwest 2008 Computer Conference attendees received a Hate on the Internet CD in their Welcome Bag.

The Community Computer Club of La Verne discovered a forensics specialist who is also presenting to many of the groups. Their past president told him that he needed to join their group (he lives in the area) before he made the presentation – and he did! Another speaker is making the rounds talking about Geo Tagging. It is so important to interact with the groups in your area to share information, speakers, etc. If one of the SCRUGS groups locates a new speaker, they share the information with the other groups and we all have a new topic for our members.

Even after 10+ years, I go home from each SCRUGS meeting with several new ideas for my computer club.
