We declined to accept a few entries from groups that did not have current APCUG memberships’, and sorted the valid entries by membership base. We then created four UG categories: Very Large – for UG’s with more than 250 members, Large – 249 to 100 members, Medium – 99 to 50 members and Small – 50 or fewer members.
Lori Berenson, APCUG Administrative Assistant, and I, Barbara Manning, International Regional Advisor co-chaired the contest this year. Bill James, APCUG Treasurer managed the Newsletter, Print and Website contests, and was a big help to Lori and I. We used an online form for the entries that worked very well. The form was designed by Rich Schinnell, with help from Linda Moore, our Online Services Chair.
We are also very pleased with the response our six judges. They were:
George Skarbek is the Director of Skarbek Consulting Pty Ltd and Past President of the Melbourne (AU) PC User Group -- http://www.melbpc.org.au/. Currently, he is the Manager of the Melb PC Internet Service (with approximately 4,000 subscribers); and has set up web sites for several clients. For the last 12 years he has been writing a Q & A column for the computer section of The Age, Victoria’s premier broadsheet newspaper. He also writes for the Sydney Morning Herald and the West Australian.
Carolyn Friedberg, Website Design Consultant and president of the Computer Club of Ocean County, http://member.apcug.org/ccoc/. Ms. Friedberg provided Website design, specializing in brochure sites for small businesses and custom-designed sites. She hand-crafted her web development, using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, and also provided Server-side scripting for storefronts, surveys, and contact forms, etc. She is proficient in PHP,and MySQL. Ms. Friedberg is currently taking time off from her business to pursue her love of family genealogy, and to extend her volunteer efforts.
Lyn Goodall, President of the Melbourne PC User Group and business consultant in the HR field. Ms Goodall is a Chartered member of the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI). She has managed HR projects, teams and systems of various kinds for both small and large organizations, including the implementation of document management “frameworks”, which enable employees to access on-line documents and allow managers to access management information. She is active in community development and volunteering, and has developed a radio program on mental health. She also has an avid interest in analog and digital photography.
In addition, Cheryl Wester, Region 10 (Northern California) UG Advisor and Melvin Weekley Region 9 (US Southwest) UG Advisor, and Judy Taylour, APCUG’S Advisor Chair all pitched in to complete the judging of such a huge group of entrants.
We also have some interest in reviewing the contest rules with an eye towards making future website contests more meaningful for the UG’s. To that end, I’m working with James Bragonier of the Front Range PC Users Group to see if we can present something to the board to change the way the contest is handled. If nothing else, there is a wealth of knowledge on the WebBoards about the contest management which I hope will be useful to future chairs.
The judging criteria this year was based on four criteria:
1. User Group Information (0 - 5 points each)
2. Layout and Design (0 - 5 points each)
3. Search Engine (0 - 5 points maximum)
4. Interesting Site
All winners will receive a trophy, a document suitable for framing and a seal that they can use on their websites, indicating that they are a winning APCUG site. All entrants will receive a seal that can be used on their site, which indicates that they participated in the contest.
