At the June Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously voted to make the computer give-away project an official function of the Club. This project has just started, with the first computers being given out on June 2. This program came about when we learned low-end systems were not selling at the garage sales. And someone commented there should be something we could do with unsold units other than taking them to the recycle center. I contacted several agencies in the area that work with needy families to solicit their assistance in identifying worthy families. I also contacted the Community Church Crafters, the Good Neighbor Shoppe, the Beautification Committee, and Habitat for Humanity to get their permissions to give away the unsold computers that had been donated to them for the garage sales. They all readily agreed the project, as outlined, was a worthwhile thing to do. The clean-up committee then got back together and prepared 13 systems, complete with working printers and a ream of paper.
I wish that all of you could have been there for the first give-away day. It was a very heartwarming sight to experience the excitement of the children and the thankfulness of the parents as they walked away with THEIR computer. They were all very happy to receive them.
