Why I Joined LCCS
by Dave DeRolph, a member of the Licking County Computer Society, Ohio
From the LCCS 2nd Quarter 2007 newsletter, Random Bits
Region 3

I can’t remember how I first heard about LCCS - it may have been an Internet search - but I attended one or two general meetings long before becoming a member. That first meeting occurred perhaps more than two years ago and the speaker talked about buying and selling on eBay. Of course, I also learned a little more about LCCS then and so the seed for future involvement in the organization was planted.

Prior to actually joining in July 2006, I occasionally visited the LCCS web site to see what activities were on the agenda. Several of the SIGs looked interesting. For years, I’ve done my own computer hardware upgrades (memory, video cards, sound cards, processors, motherboard, etc.) and have also occasionally helped other people solve software or hardware problems.

So, the Repair SIG sounded particularly interesting. I figured I knew enough to be able to contribute to that SIG and, no doubt, still learn more about computers. I attended my first Repair SIG meeting in May or June 2006 to see what it was all about and then submitted my membership application and fee at the July Repair SIG meeting.

Since joining, I’ve attended a session of the Web SIG and the Linux SIG. Both were interesting. I recently did a test installation of Ubuntu Linux and had some problems, but I know the LCCS Linux SIG is a very good resource and I look forward to learning more about Linux through that SIG.

In addition to the topics of the general meetings and the SIGs, I’m glad to be affiliated with an organization that provides a service to the community, and the environment, through the semi-annual recycling drive, that provides computer learning opportunities to seniors, and that makes available older, refurbished computers to those who can’t afford to buy new. (LCCS won a 2nd Place Jerry Award in the How the Community Service Project is Managed category at the 2007 annual conference.)

Note: Is your website up-to-date? Is it interesting? Will it entice prospective members to attend your meetings and/or SIGs? Does it have your meeting location address, date and time of meeting within one click of your home page? Many times we forget to take a look at our websites with the eyes of a prospective member.
