Spring is gone and summer is upon us. Time to think of summer activities. The Bowling Green Area Microcomputer User Group, Inc., the Kentucky Computer Society and the Computers Are Easy all had picnics in June. Socials such as these are good ways for members to get to know each other.

The New Wave Computer User Group in Chicago, Illinois held a “Youth Leadership & Technology Conference” in April. The New Wave Computer User Group, Inc. joined with the African-American Leadership Roundtable (AALR) as co-hosts. They offered a wide range of activities. Their goal was to attract more young people and their parents to get a glimpse of current and future trends in computer technology.

The following was found on the Computers Are Easy web site (http://www.caeug.net/). LG Electronics (http://www.lge.com/) and Linspire (http://www.linspire.com/) have reached patent agreements with MS. It looks like MS has Red Hat ( http://www.redhat.com/ ) in its sites. Red Hat is the largest Linux competitor to MS.

These deals with smaller Linux companies may keep Linux under the MS thumb. The public has no knowledge of the terms of these deals. The stories are at here and here, and here.

In a related story MS hires a Linux expert from the Linux Foundation ( http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/Main_Page ). Making so many deals requires experts in open source software (oss). The story is at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/13/microsoft_linux_recruits/. Tom Hanrahan, the oss expert, once worked for IBM.
