From the President

So, the big news in tech this month was still another delay in the release of Microsoft’s Vista, this time until January of 2007. The tech world went scrambling and bemoaning a poor Christmas selling season for computers, while the consumer world pretty much shrugged it off. I was asked why this disparity of reaction existed. While I am not an expert or a poll taker, my guess is that consumers are more interested in an operating system that does what it’s promised rather than one that’s released when promised. From a software standpoint, the OS is still a piece of software. Developers take the input from users and professionals and attempt to incorporate those requests into the next version. Many times, this is easier said than done. It’s not uncommon to find that including “X” into the system breaks “Y”. Consumers are also anxious for products that work “out of the box” and don’t need updates and fixes from the get-go. So, Microsoft, take your time….get it right……..don’t let the tech industry push you into a release before it’s ready.

And, speaking of 2007……(nice segue, wasn’t it?), it’s time to start talking about the APCUG Annual Conference for 2007. You’ll find some information in this issue of Reports that I’m sure will tweak your interest about our next event. We’ll be putting on our first ever Digital Photo Contest. The contest is open to any member of an APCUG member group, and you have multiple chances to win…so get those cameras out and start clicking. It’s also time for you to think about the Jerry Awards. I’ve talked to a lot of members who tell me they never enter because they either don’t think they do any Community Service, or their project isn’t good enough to win. In the first instance, it’s almost universally not true….if you’re out in your community I’d bet that you are performing some service. In the second instance, winning an award is nice, but it will not ever replace the feeling of doing something good. Share your project….those groups that are having trouble coming up with a project would like to know what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. Sharing your project not only helps other APCUG member groups, it helps other communities. Do your projects for the good they do…not to win awards….share your projects for the good it does….not to win awards. To borrow a phrase from a movie…..”If winning is everything, and you don’t win…..what do you have left?”
